Brevard Schools Shine in State and National Rankings

How does your student’s high school compare to others in Florida and across the United States?
According to the latest U.S. News & World Report high school rankings, five Brevard County schools placed among the top 110 in Florida. Two of them even earned recognition in the Top 100 high schools nationwide.

The Brevard schools honored include:

• West Shore Jr./Sr. High (Melbourne)

• Edgewood Jr./Sr. High (Merritt Island)

• Satellite High (Satellite Beach)

• Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High (Cocoa Beach)

• Viera High (Viera)

Both West Shore Jr./Sr. High and Edgewood Jr./Sr. High secured coveted spots among the Top 100 schools in America.

Superintendent Commends Student Achievement

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell praised the district’s strong performance in a statement on August 21.

“It is great to see the hard work of our students and staff recognized with these rankings,” Rendell said. “Our community should be proud. Access to advanced coursework is key to student success, and these schools are excelling in that area.”

He emphasized that the recognition highlights Brevard Public Schools’ mission to provide excellence for every student, while continuing to expand rigorous academic programs and supportive learning environments.

How U.S. News Ranks High Schools

Every year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates schools based on academic performance. Rankings are calculated with the help of RTI International, a nonprofit research organization.

Schools are measured on six major factors:

• College readiness

• Curriculum breadth

• State assessment proficiency

• State assessment performance

• Underserved student performance

• Graduation rates

In 2025, more than 24,000 U.S. public high schools were ranked, including 654 schools in Florida.

1. West Shore Jr./Sr. High – Melbourne

• #5 in Florida | #57 in U.S.

• Graduation rate: 100%

• Math: 98% | Reading: 94% | Science: 99%

• College readiness score: 94.5

• Economically disadvantaged students: 12%

• Student-teacher ratio: 18:1

2. Edgewood Jr./Sr. High – Merritt Island

• #9 in Florida | #89 in U.S.

• Graduation rate: 100%

• Math: 89% | Reading: 96% | Science: 98%

• College readiness score: 93.8

• Economically disadvantaged students: 16%

• Student-teacher ratio: 19:1

3. Satellite High – Satellite Beach

• #69 in Florida | #1,114 in U.S.

• Graduation rate: 97%

• Math: 68% | Reading: 68% | Science: 82%

• College readiness score: 53.4

• Economically disadvantaged students: 20%

• Student-teacher ratio: 22:1

4. Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High – Cocoa Beach

• #85 in Florida | #1,280 in U.S.

• Graduation rate: 99%

• Math: 43% | Reading: 69% | Science: 80%

• College readiness score: 56.5

• Economically disadvantaged students: 29%

• Student-teacher ratio: 20:1

5. Viera High – Viera

• #101 in Florida | #1,492 in U.S.

• Graduation rate: 98%

• Math: 66% | Reading: 70% | Science: 81%

• College readiness score: 46.4

• Economically disadvantaged students: 16%

• Student-teacher ratio: 22:1

Brevard Schools Continue to Lead in Florida Education

With two schools in the national Top 100 and five schools ranking among Florida’s Top 110, Brevard County continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in education.

As Superintendent Rendell stated, these results show that Brevard schools are not only preparing students for college but also ensuring long-term academic and career success.
