President Droupadi Murmu praised Bihar’s progress in enhancing medical infrastructure but emphasized the need for further development. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), she highlighted the importance of inclusive healthcare facilities.
Call for Advanced Medical Centres in Bihar
President Murmu stressed that Bihar should establish specialized medical centers similar to those in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Indore. “PMCH should collaborate with leading hospitals nationwide for research and treatment of cancer and other critical diseases,” she said. She added that such advancements would not only improve healthcare access but also contribute to Bihar’s economic growth.
Legacy of PMCH and Its Contribution
Established as Temple Medical School in 1874, PMCH has a rich history of medical excellence. “Once counted among Asia’s top hospitals, its alumni have earned recognition worldwide for their dedication and expertise,” Murmu remarked.
She also underscored the difficulties faced by patients traveling outside Bihar for treatment, such as delays, accommodation challenges, and financial strain. “Decentralizing quality healthcare institutions will ease the burden on major cities and benefit patients,” she noted.
Technology and Healthcare Advancements
President Murmu emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in modern medicine. She urged PMCH stakeholders to adopt emerging technologies for enhanced accuracy and efficiency in medical care.
She also encouraged doctors to spread awareness about the importance of blood and organ donation, recognizing their role as healers, researchers, and educators in nation-building.
Government’s Commitment to Healthcare Development
Union Health Minister J P Nadda highlighted the NDA government’s efforts to improve Bihar’s healthcare system. “Bihar was once ranked among the lowest in healthcare, but today, it is among the leading states,” he said.
He noted that, apart from Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar is the only state to have received two AIIMS from the central government—one in Patna and another under construction in Darbhanga. Additionally, the government is converting eight district hospitals into medical colleges.
President’s Visit to Bihar
President Murmu arrived in Bihar for a two-day visit and was welcomed by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. She will leave for Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday.
